About

About Fern & Shelf

Fern & Shelf is a guide for people who want greener, more alive homes — without needing a backyard, a degree in botany, or thousands of dollars in equipment.

We write about indoor gardening, houseplants, hydroponic systems, grow lights, balcony herbs, and small-space green living. Our focus is on honest, practical advice for renters, apartment dwellers, and anyone whose growing space is measured in square feet rather than acres.

What you’ll find here

  • Honest product reviews of hydroponic gardens, grow lights, self-watering planters, and indoor gardening kits. We name what’s worth the money and what isn’t.
  • Comparison guides for the products people actually search for — Click & Grow, AeroGarden, LetPot, and others.
  • Plant care guides focused on plants that actually survive in apartments, with real advice for low light, dry air, irregular watering, and curious pets.
  • Small-space gardening ideas for balconies, windowsills, kitchen counters, and the one bright corner you have.

Our approach

We test what we recommend whenever possible. When a product is brand new or unavailable to us, we say so. We don’t write filler content, we don’t recycle Amazon product descriptions, and we don’t pretend every product is wonderful. Some are. Many aren’t. We’re upfront about both.

A note on transparency

Fern & Shelf is funded by affiliate commissions — when you click a product link on our site and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no cost to you. This is how the site stays free to read.

Affiliate commissions never influence what we recommend. Products we don’t believe in don’t make our lists, regardless of how much they pay. For the full breakdown of our affiliate relationships, see our Affiliate Disclosure.
