What we are testing

We will test surface and media uniformity, thermostat accuracy, warm-up and recovery, power use, wet-tray behavior, and germination consistency.

How ranking is scored

Even media temperature and safe control outrank maximum surface heat. A mat that produces fast germination in the center and delayed corners has not solved the whole tray.

Buying guidance before our measurements are complete

Choose a controlled mat when room temperature changes or the crop has a narrow germination target. A plain mat can work in a stable cool room, but pair it with a thermostat and an independent thermometer rather than assuming it adds the same 10–20°F in every setup.

Heat mats are electrical devices used near water. Follow listing, placement, inspection, and cleaning instructions. Stop using a mat with damaged film, cord, or connector.
