How to Use LECA for Houseplants Without Guessing at Water Levels

LECA is lightweight expanded clay aggregate. The porous pebbles support roots and wick water from a small reservoir, but they do not provide the organic matter or nutrient reserve found in potting mix. A successful setup needs clean media, air space, a complete nutrient solution, and regular observation.
Plants that transition more easily
Rooted cuttings and vigorous aroids often adapt more easily than old plants with dense, fragile root balls. Pothos, heartleaf philodendron, monstera, and some hoyas are common candidates. Plants that need long dry periods or have very fine sensitive roots require closer management.
What you need
- Horticultural LECA, not decorative craft pebbles
- An inner pot or net pot with openings
- An opaque outer reservoir
- A complete hydroponic nutrient
- Clean water and a measuring jug
- Optional pH and EC meters for repeatable care

Prepare the pebbles
Rinse until runoff is mostly clear, then soak according to the product guidance. Clean the container and reservoir. LECA does not need to be sterile for every routine use, but material from a diseased plant should not move directly into another setup.
Transition a soil-grown plant
- Water the plant lightly the day before removal.
- Slide out the root ball and loosen soil by hand.
- Rinse roots in lukewarm water without scrubbing fine tissue.
- Trim only roots that are soft, hollow, or dead.
- Hold the crown at its original height and fill LECA around the roots.
- Add a shallow reservoir below most of the existing root mass.
Some soil roots may die during transition while water-adapted roots form. Inspect weekly and remove decaying tissue before it fouls the reservoir.

Set the water level
Begin with water in roughly the lower quarter of the outer container, below the crown and away from most upper roots. Capillary action will carry moisture upward. A transparent indicator tube is useful, but an opaque outer pot limits algae.
Do not fill the container to the top. Submerging the crown removes air and invites rot. Let the reservoir approach empty before refilling unless the plant and system instructions specify a constant level.
Feed with a complete nutrient
Plain water cannot supply all essential nutrients indefinitely. Use a complete hydroponic fertilizer at a mild starting strength, following its label. Flush and inspect
Flush the inner pot with clean water every few weeks or when white deposits appear, then wash the reservoir. Check odor, root texture, algae, and blocked openings. Frequency depends on fertilizer, water mineral content, and plant use.

Moving back to potting mix
Water-adapted roots may struggle when moved abruptly into dense mix. Choose an airy medium, keep it slightly more even during the first weeks, and reduce moisture gradually as soil roots form. Transitioning twice in quick succession adds stress.
Evidence and expectations
LECA is a growing method, not a cure for watering mistakes. It makes water level visible and reduces loose soil, yet it adds nutrient mixing, pH drift, flushing, and reservoir hygiene. Try one easy plant before converting a collection.
